Department of English, HiralalBhakat College, Nalhati, Birbhum has been one of the most prominent departments of the College.Beginning with a Compulsory Course in English associated with the Department of Commerce it gradually gets permission to start a General Course at first and then a Hons. Course in due time. Innovation has always been the hallmark of the Department and it now hosts Compulsory LanguageCourses, Core Courses, Ability Enhancement Courses, Skill Enhancement Courses, Discipline Specific Elective Courses and Generic Elective Courses for young scholars. With a team of dedicated and energetic faculty members the Department continues to explore new avenues in its pursuit of excellence.
The learning environment is enhanced by the use of smart classrooms and efforts are taken to ensure that the learning process is innovative and progressive, giving due importance to problem-based learning. Assignments and other learning activities are set in line with this approach. Peer learning, tutorial classes, mentoring and promoting education beyond the syllabi, student-centric participatory learning and proper grievance redressal further ensure the holistic development of students. In addition extension and literary activities are regularly conducted e.g.student seminars, gender sensitization programmes, alumni meets, publication of manuscript magazines, the observance of a cultural and literary fest in each academic sessionetc. Being a centre for cultivation of academic excellence the Department engages in research based assignments and ensures that workshops, conferences and seminars are conducted at regular intervals across the academic year. Counselling for the NET ( National Eligibility Test) is a recent initiative of the department. The involvement of the Governing Body of College has always been commendable, and their initiative in instituting prizes for the best Hons. And Gen. Category students deserves special mention. The Department has produced stalwarts in numerous fields – Writers, Editors, Teachers, Professors, WBCS and other Govt. and Bank Officials to mention a few. Distinguished alumnae who have made their mark in diverse places testify to the generations the Department has impacted.
